The Good: Dragon App is free for smartphones where you most need it. It is really fast at typing your words. Your text can be easily shared on social networks. Can be used on the go. The interface is stylish and user-friendly, so you don’t need to be a software pro to use it. The app is very useful. Dragon Dictation is a free app that lets you speak into your iPad or iPhone and it will write down what you say. Dragon Search and Dragon Go are free apps that lets you search for things just by speaking to your iPhone or iPad.

The basic reason why this app is free at present is because nuances using the corpus of data that they're collecting to build a better speaker independent Acoustic Model.
I doubt if you're ever going to get more than 60 seconds anyway for the reasons that you intimate in your post. The service uses a backend server running the DNS SDK Server version for collecting speech data, converting it to text and sending it back to your iPhone. It isn't the application that needs Beta testing, it's the service. And, you're doing that right now by virtue of having the service free. However, you're still paying for the connection through your own wireless provider.
In short, nuances letting you have it for free because you're doing their dirty work for them. Nevertheless, it's going to benefit everyone in the long run whether you use that app or whether you use Dragon NaturallySpeaking because the speech data that is collected can be used for both. In fact, it has been used for DNS 11. Some users are getting phenomenal accuracy, some users are not. However, accuracy will improve over time as Nuance collects more and more speech data.

Complete the following steps to use your mobile device as a dictation source.

Do the following on the computer where Dragon is installed.

1. From the DragonBar, select Profile>Manage Dictation Sources.

   The Manage Dictation Sources dialog box opens.

2. Click Add New Dictation Source.

   The Add a Dictation Source dialog box opens.

3. Select Dragon Remote Microphone Application, and then click Next.

   Dragon customizes itself. When complete, the Microphone Connection dialog box opens.

4. Do one of the following to allow your device to find your computer:

   • If you have an Apple device and you have Bonjour installed and running on your computer, use Bonjour.

   • If your device has a camera, use it to scan the barcode shown in the Microphone Connection dialog box.

   • Add the configuration manually in the Dragon Remote Microphone application.

5. Click Next.

   The Test your audio device dialog box appears.

6. Tap the microphone button in the app.
7. Click Start in the Test your audio device dialog box.
8. Read the text shown on the screen.

9. Click Next, then click Finish.

   You can now tap the app's microphone button and begin dictating.
