Offered the chance to freshen up after a considerable journey, the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas midsize SUV says, “Yes, thanks.” The sizeable 3-row people hauler that’s been on the road since model-year 2018 gets a styling update, new driver-assistance features, and wider availability of 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
The refreshed-for-2021 Volkswagen Atlas gets a styling facelift that includes a new three-bar grille, new LED headlights and taillights, and revised front and rear bumpers that make it about three inches longer overall.
For its test of the ’21 model, Consumer Guide went right to the top with a V6 SEL Premium. Starting at $50,015 with delivery, it is the most-expensive Atlas, though buyers who pick a Premium with the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine save $1800. (Aurora Red Metallic paint being the test truck’s only extra-cost option, it topped out at $50,410.) Premiums rise above “base” SELs by dint of things like standard leather seating surfaces, Park Assist that can steer the vehicle into a properly sized space, Fender audio system with center speaker and subwoofer, and an overhead-view camera. AWD is the sole driveline available for Premiums; any SEL Premium is $4800 more than an SEL with the same engine and 4MOTION.
The ’21 Atlas’s interior is mildly freshened via a new steering wheel, an updated version of VW’s Car-Net infotainment system, and other minor updates. SEL Premiums come standard with VW’s slick Digital Cockpit virtual gauge cluster.
The pairing of the 4-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive is one of the changes for ’21. Previously, the 2.0 had only been teamed with front-wheel drive—which precluded the engine from being offered in the SEL Premium. The exterior facelift brings a new three-bar grille integrated with the lighting elements. (New headlight and taillight designs feature standard LED lighting.) Revised bumpers make the Atlas about three inches longer overall. Drivers grip a redesigned steering wheel, and can call upon an improved Car-Net telematics system with an upgraded mobile app that enables various no-charge services for up to five years.
The Atlas is one of the biggest three-row midsize SUVs on the market, so it offers excellent passenger room all-around. The second-row seats offer outstanding legroom, and tilt and slide forward for access to the third-row seats.
A number of the changes made to the 2021 Atlas were previewed on the shorter 2-row Atlas Cross Sport that made its debut in 2020. Beyond the items previously mentioned, other standard equipment found on the SEL Premium includes 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive front lighting and high-beam control, panoramic sunroof, heated power-adjustable mirrors with memory setting, silver roof rails, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a 10-way power adjustable memory driver’s seat and 8-way power adjustable front-passenger seat, heated front seats, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and tri-zone automatic climate control.
The list of technology and infotainment items is pretty extensive by the time it reaches the top rank. There is a “Digital Cockpit” instrument display (configurable through steering-wheel buttons); adaptive cruise control; forward-collision warning; pedestrian monitoring and autonomous emergency braking; automatic post-collision braking; front and rear parking aids; lane-departure warning; blind-spot monitoring; rear cross-traffic alert; remote engine start; keyless access and starting; “hands-free” power liftgate; wireless charging; Wi-Fi hotspot for up to four devices; and AM/FM/HD audio with voice control, satellite radio, and navigation. New for the year are Traffic Jam Assist and Dynamic Road Sign Display.
The Atlas’s cargo space is excellent as well–there’s 20.6 cubic feet behind the third-row seats, 55.5 cu. ft. behind the second row, and 96.8 cu. ft. with both the second and third rows folded to create a flat, level load floor.
For the most part, the rest of the ’21 Atlas story is a familiar tale. The carried-over V6 and turbocharged 4-cylinder engines are still paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The fine passenger room and cargo space are unaltered, and the driving dynamics from one of the largest vehicles VW has ever sold in the U.S. are competent and comfortable.
The narrow-angle V6 makes 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, enough for eager launches in city driving or when passing on the highway. It is smooth and commendably quiet. Selectable drive modes—“Eco,” “Normal,” “Sport,” and “Custom”—modify throttle response and transmission operation for more or less zing as desired. EPA fuel-mileage estimates for the V6/4MOTION combo are 16 mpg in the city, 22 on the highway, and 18 combined (all 1 mpg down from 2018, when CG last tested an Atlas powered this way). This driver saw 20.5 mpg from a stint of 60.6 miles composed of 35 percent city-style operation.
Availability of the Atlas’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is expanded for 2021, but our tester had the top engine choice: a 276-hp 3.6-liter V6. New-design 20-inch alloy wheels are part of the 2021 freshening.
Ride is smooth and handling is fairly easy. However, given its size—the Atlas is larger than the majority of entries in the class—it’s not as easy to maneuver in parking lots and other close-quarters situations. The 4MOTION “On-road,” “Snow,” “Off-road,” and “Custom off-road” modes tailor powertrain operation to surface conditions. Off-road incorporates hill-descent control for heightened vehicle control on steep grades.
Where that size shows up to its best advantage is inside, where there’s lots of leg- and headroom in a wide cabin, especially in the front and middle rows. The generous width and a flat floor make three-across seating for adults in the middle row a reality. (Individual captain’s chairs that restrict seating to six people are available.) Cushion level for the Atlas’s third-row seat is high enough to be acceptable for grown-ups, and adjustable middle-row seats can free up some legroom for them—but nothing can be done about the middling headroom. Second-row seats tilt and track forward a bit to facilitate getting in and out of the back row.
Even with all seats up there’s good cargo room, plus some underfloor storage. Side pockets off the load floor hold incidentals. The halves of the 50/50-split third-row seats drop at the tug of a cord, and with the 60/40 second-row seats down too, there is 96.8 cubic feet of flat-floor cargo-hauling area—19 cubic feet more than in the shorter Cross Sport with its somewhat-sloped roofline.
SEL Premium passengers are treated well with comfortable and supportive seats, and abundant soft surfaces on the dash, door panels, and tops of the front doors. Storage for personal items is managed by capacious glove and console boxes, a pull-out drawer at the left of the steering column, good-sized pockets with bottle holders in all doors, and pouches on the backs of the front seats. Cup holders reside in the console, central armrest in the middle-row seat, and sidewalls flanking the third row. The Discover Media infotainment system (with 8-inch touchscreen) is fairly straightforward to use, though saving radio presets requires an extra step or two. The climate system has convenient dials for temperature and fan speed, and middle-row occupants get their own controls.
Roominess, comfort, and competitive pricing—all of which the Atlas has—never get stale. Still, it doesn’t hurt to freshen them up.
The Volkswagen Atlas’s updates help keep it fresh against a formidable roster of three-row rivals, such as the Chevrolet Traverse, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride and Toyota Highlander.

2022 VW Atlas It’s been three years since the Volkswagen Atlas took off into the full three-line crossover SUV scene, but it’s still getting a full facelift.
VW claims this is the first example of its new policy of shortening its standard four-year renewal cadence, but this nose job isn’t purely for arrogance.
It also brings increased pedestrian protection to the bumper structure which adds to the overall length by about 3 inches.
Of course, as with all the repetition, it seems that way, the new look – especially on the sporty R-Line trim shown – strives for a more aggressive mien than ever before,
With black accented patch fascia vents and a fake front skidplate looking ready to push. – starting Bonneville speed record racers (it’s just prepared to push pedestrians gently).
The side cladding and rear bumper were also revised and macho to match the design of the new wheels, which are 18, 20, or 21 inches in diameter.
2022 VW Atlas Review
VW is refreshing the Atlas 2022 with new front and rear views that increase the overall length of the SUV by nearly three inches.
A more attractive three-spoke grille adorns the front end, as do the revised headlamps that now feature standard LED elements.
Models with the R-Line option are equipped with custom badges, body kits, and 20 or 21-inch rims.
Inside, you’ll find a new steering wheel, updated stitching on the seats, an 8.0-inch touchscreen (on SE and SEL models), and the latest iteration of VW’s Car-Net smartphone app.
The four-cylinder Atlas is now available with all-wheel drive for the first time.

Review model 2022 VW Atlas launched the two-line Atlas Cross Sport in 2020 – two years after the standard three-line Atlas.
In 2022, the Atlas Cross Sport receives a few technology and security updates but remains largely unchanged. With this model still fresh, it is hoped that the Atlas Cross Sport 2022 can become the default model.
Visually, the current Atlas Cross Sport maintains most of the Vanilla Atlas design, including the upright face, smooth body lines, thin hood edges, and upright rear doors.
Cross Sport liven up the atmosphere with the rear body that leans forward. We hope that this design remains the same in the VW Atlas 2022.
Inside, the Atlas Cross Sport features the same Volkswagen cabin as the base Atlas. The room is clean, clutter-free, and secure with a long stretch of plastic without features and soft-touch materials.
VW adds a sporty feel with a flat-bottom steering wheel, but this only breaks the boredom for a moment.
The interior of the Cross Sport differs from the base Atlas by its two-row seating configuration – the base Atlas is a three-row crossover. We hope that this simple interior design remains in the Atlas Cross Sport 2022.
Atlas Sport offers a lot of standard equipment, including a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, upholstery, 17-inch wheels, and more.
Buyers can move up the trim level ladder and get more premium perks, such as an 8-inch touchscreen, three-zone climate control, 20-inch wheels, faux leather upholstery, 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster, five USB ports, Fender audio.

The Atlas Cross Sport currently has two powertrain options. The basic setup is a 235 horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, but buyers can opt for the 276 hp 3.6-liter V6.
This engine is paired with the same eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional with both engines.
We hope that this powertrain option remains the same in the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport 2022.
The current VW Atlas Cross Sport hasn’t passed IIHS safety testing, but the 2020 model performed “Good” results in five of the six IIHS crash tests. It has not been tested for the strength of the roof.
It even received a “Good” rating for the available LED projector headlights. While this sets it for Top Safety Pick status,
IIHS has not yet assessed its standard automatic emergency braking, disqualifying it from TSP considerations.
We hope that all the features and safety ratings remain the same in the Atlas Cross Sport 2022.

2022 VW Atlas Redesign
The Volkswagen Atlas 2022 has the boxy look, spacious interior, and spacious practicality that have characterized SUVs for decades.
It’s also one of the largest mid-sized crossovers, with a giant footprint that gives way to three broad rows of seating.
VW wanted the Atlas to look and feel like a hospital room, but it made up for that sterile aesthetic with many of the features it wanted.

The chrome line spans the width of the car between the headlights which is more angular and aggressive than the previous model.
However, the new three-row Atlas front end isn’t quite the same as the Cross Sport, as the lower air intakes look a little different.

The family-friendly interior space, direct control layout, and abundant cupholders make the Atlas a practical choice, even among other very practical rivals.
Plus, the third row of seats that can comfortably accommodate a full-size adult is a sure win.
The Volkswagen atlas interior design of the Atlas is uncomplicated and useful – perfect for families but not too much for a stylist.
The cabin should accommodate anything a suburban family can throw away, and there are plenty of carefully placed storage nooks for storing small items.
In our baggage testing, Atlas impressed us by fitting four carry-on cases behind the third row and 38 behind the first, just like the very large Honda Pilot.

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Engine
The Atlas comes with one of two engines a 235-hp four-cylinder or a 276-hp V-6 both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front or all-wheel drive.
The V-6 feels and sounds smooth, transmitting slight vibrations into the cab.

Although the four-cylinder model and the last V-6 we tested had moderate acceleration, on the road, they rarely felt underpowered.
While it’s not as fun to drive as the Mazda CX-9, the Atlas responds dutifully to steering input and never feels awkward. Composed on the highway and agile in the city. The ride was smooth, and all but the hardest holes were absorbed.

Available individually or as a set in the Basecamp style package, VW’s new Basecamp accessory line includes special body cladding elements that create a more rugged ground look,

If this upgrade looks familiar, it’s because VW’s new accessory line was inspired by the off-road-focused Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp concept that debuted at the 2019 New York Auto Show.
Produced by AirDesign, the Basecamp styling package includes two satin, silver and anthracite textured front bumper guards, textured anthracite fender flares with integrated splash guards, satin silver side door panels, and satin silver rear mosquito nets with hitch trailer access.
A unique Basecamp badge has also been added to the front quarter panel. However, VW does not recommend applying a styling package to Atlas models that are not equipped with a trailer hitch; it’s also not compatible with the R-Line trim.
To enhance the SUV’s off-road capability, the Basecamp accessory line also includes the unique 17-inch Traverse MX wheels manufactured by Fifteen52 first seen on the Atlas Basecamp concept.
The unique 17-inch wheels are made with frosted graphite and luminous silver and can be equipped with 245 / 70R17 thick all-terrain tires.
The new line of accessories for the Atlas comes as no surprise as a trademark filing uncovered earlier this year already suggests VW plans to build a production version of the Atlas Basecamp concept.
Pricing details are yet to be confirmed, but VW’s new Basecamp Gear line will be available this spring.
